I’m not much of a voyeur when it comes to tradegy so I’m not one to send out photos of the bad stuff. But I found this news.com.au gallery that I thought was tasteful and showed the enormous burden the fire fighters have had to shoulder.

And then there is this picture.

So much amazing work being done by so many amazing people.

Victorian Bush fires

The past couple of days have been absolutely amazing in the most tragic sense. I’ve been watching and listening and reading in absolute dismay at the events unfolding only 50km away.

It’s unbelievable to think that while I was sitting in an air conditioned hotel room last Saturday Victoria was burning so severely. Bush fires aren’t new, it’s what makes Australia so unique, but they’ve never been so fatal.

I’m a little shell-shocked I think because of the proximity. I worked for DSE for 3 bush fire seasons and while I was fully aware of the problems and tragedies of those, they’ve never been so close to Melbourne, and I’ve never been able to identify with so many of the affected areas.

Kate’s sister was close to losing her house at the front of one of the biggest fires, colleagues at work were in the King Lake region, King Lake was the first ever place we explored when we moved to Melbourne and Marysville has been a winter favourite. I’ve taken pretty much everyone who’s ever stayed with me in Winter there on the way up to Lake Mountain. To think that it’s almost entirely gone is unbelievable.
